Postal record

Marysville Postmasters

A documented chronology of Marysville postmasters, acting postmasters, and officers-in-charge, accompanied by local history about the places that served as post offices.

About this collection

USPS records identify federal postal appointments by name, role, and appointment date.

Official USPS appointment records are the primary source used here to identify Marysville’s postmasters, acting postmasters, and officers-in-charge. The chronology records appointment dates without turning them into estimated service ranges.

Newspapers, historical publications, city and Historical Society materials, and the local ledger remain valuable for tracing the homes, stores, boxes, streets, and dedicated buildings that served Marysville residents. Research remains ongoing because older postal records can contain omissions or transcription errors.

How to read this record: These are appointment dates reported by the United States Postal Service, not estimated service ranges. An appointment date may not be the exact first day a person began performing the job.

Local historical record

Marysville Post-Office Locations and Local History

These homes, stores, boxes, and buildings come from local historical sources and the project’s ledger transcription. The periods describe local location history; they are not federal appointment or service ranges.

  1. Before 1884

James P. Comeford’s home or business

    Location: West Front Street

Before Marysville had a dedicated post-office building, local histories describe mail arriving by rowboat from Steamboat Slough at the home or business of James P. Comeford. The local ledger also references the Snohomish–Mukilteo boat.

  2. 1884

    Arthur Quinn’s residence

Location: Between Delta and State Streets

The local ledger records an early post-office location at Arthur Quinn’s residence. His separate federal appointment appears in the official chronology above.

  3. 1885–1890

Henry B. Myers and Marysville’s first post-office boxes

Location: Front Street between Ash and Beach Streets

Henry B. Myers operated a general store in early Marysville and installed the community’s first rentable post-office boxes in the rear of the business. Although one secondary source identifies him as a postmaster, the USPS appointment records and multiple newspaper histories do not list him as holding that office. He is therefore included as an important figure in Marysville’s postal history, but not as a confirmed postmaster.

  4. 1890–1893

    The Bartlett Store

    Location: Front and Beach Streets

The local ledger places the post office at the rear of the Bartlett Store during the period it associates with Charles H. Schaefer.

  5. 1893–1897

    Across from City Hall

    Location: Downtown Marysville

The local ledger records a post-office location across the street from City Hall during the period it associates with Henry A. Plate.

  6. 1897–1899

    North side of Front Street

    Location: Opposite City Hall

The local ledger places the post office on the north side of Front Street during the period it associates with Accie Johnston.

  7. 1899–1916

    Second and Cedar

Location: Next to the bank building

The local ledger records this location during the period it associates with Henry A. Rathvon.

  8. 1916–1934

    The State Street post office

Location: State Street between Second and Third Streets

The local ledger places the post office here during the periods it associates with Mabel Murphy and George L. Deu Pree. It also notes that Frank Mardon began working in the post office on April 15, 1927.

  9. 1940

    The 1940 post-office building

Location: Fifth Street between Delta and State Streets

The local ledger records a new dedicated post-office building at this location on May 26, 1940.

  10. Later 20th century

The move to 1010 State Avenue

    Location: 1010 State Avenue

Local historical information places the post office at this address during the period associated with Leonard E. Amundson.

Research note: The project’s current ledger transcription says “1010 State Street” and does not provide an exact move date. The Street/Avenue wording requires further source verification.
